India Faces Backlash Over COP29 Negotiations and Climate Targets

At the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) held in December 2024, India faced significant international criticism for its stance on climate change commitments. Despite calling for developed nations to take more responsibility for the global climate crisis, India's reluctance to accelerate its own carbon reduction targets led to disagreements with several Western countries. India proposed a longer timeline for achieving net-zero emissions, citing the country's developmental challenges. This prompted protests from environmental organizations, who accused India of stalling meaningful progress. On the other hand, India continued to stress the importance of equitable climate action, particularly emphasizing financial aid for developing nations to transition to renewable energy. The negotiations saw heated exchanges, with India reaffirming its commitment to addressing climate change, but urging the developed world to fulfill its financial obligations as part of the Paris Agreement. The discussions left some aspects of the climate debate unresolved, and the impact on India’s climate policies remains uncertain.
